Learn About Our Plastic Injection Molding Process

AN-Prototype Injection Mold Class

At AN-Prototype, we have been designing and manufacturing precise custom injection molds using high quality materials. The mold process ensures consistency and repeatability, fast lead times and low prices, ensuring that every plastic injection molded part manufactured complies with international standards. From prototypes, to small batches, to production tooling, we offer the service of manufacturing durable and reliable tooling.Standard injection molds are defined in classes from class 105 (prototype) to class 101 (volume production).

105 Mold

The 105 mold was created at the cheapest price possible to make the minimum number of plastic prototype parts to be tested.

104 Mold

104 molds are generally less than 100,000 cycles, suitable for small batch manufacturing. Prices range from low to moderate.

103 Mold

103 molds refer to medium-sized production molds with less than 500,000 cycles. The 103 die is a very popular die for low to medium production volumes.

102 Mold

The 102 mold is a medium to high volume tooling for parts that require tight tolerances. This is a high-quality, relatively high-priced mold.

101 Mold

Over 1,000,000 cycles, 101 mold is designed for the manufacture of extremely high volume plastic parts. 101 molds are the most expensive and made with only the highest quality steel materials.

Available Injection Molded Part Materials

The best injection molding starts with high-quality raw materials, and AN-Prototype’s plastic injection molding process can be adapted to a variety of plastics, including all thermoplastics and some thermosets as well as liquid silicones. After we understand the basics of materials such as common grades, brands, advantages and disadvantages, we select the appropriate injection molding material according to your application requirements.

As a high-strength general-purpose engineering plastic, ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) plastic is a thermoplastic used to manufacture many commercial products for its excellent performance and low price.

Nylon (PA 6)

Nylon PA 6 is a synthetic thermoplastic polymer that offers increased mechanical strength, stiffness, good thermal stability and/or chemical resistance and is very versatile.

POM (polyoxymethylene) is a common engineering plastic. It is very hard, has good wear and moisture resistance, high wear resistance, low friction and dimensional stability.

PC (Polycarbonate) is a naturally transparent or colored lightweight glass-like plastic. It is lightweight, very strong and elastic, and has impact resistance, excellent feature details, and is widely used in many industries, such as lenses, electronic equipment, etc.

Polyamide 6/6

PA 6/6 (Polyamide 6/6, Nylon 6/6) Plastic material with increased mechanical strength, rigidity, good thermal stability and/or chemical resistance.

PVC (polyvinyl chloride or Vinyl) is a high-strength rigid thermoplastic material and one of the third most widely used synthetic plastic polymers in the world, commonly found in pipes, non-food packaging and decoration.

PP (Polypropylene) is the second most widely used plastic in injection molded parts. It has tough yet flexible properties, can carry light loads at different temperatures for a long time, and is often required to make parts that require chemical or corrosion resistance.

PU (PUR or Polyurethane) is an elastomeric plastic consisting of units of an organic compound combined with urethane (polyurethane). It has high load-bearing capacity, abrasion and impact resistance, tear resistance, and also has water resistance, oil resistance, grease resistance, electrical properties.

Acrylic (PMMA)

Acrylic plastic, also known as plexiglass, is one of the most transparent plastic materials. Due to its low price, high transparency and light weight, it is an ideal replacement for glass in many applications, has good wear resistance, and is ideal for parts or products that work outdoors.

PC-ABS (Polycarbonate-ABS) is the optimal combination of PC and ABS, a high impact thermoplastic with higher strength engineering thermoplastics. It combines the strength and heat resistance of PC with the flexibility of ABS, which is slightly more flexible than standard polycarbonate.

Polyethylene (PE)

PE (polyethylene) is a lightweight, durable thermoplastic with high ductility, abrasion and chemical resistance, commonly used in packaging, pipes, films, bottles and more. PE is one of the most commonly used plastics in the world.

HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) has an excellent strength-to-weight ratio and chemical resistance. It is a thermoplastic polymer produced from the monomer ethylene and is widely used in fuel tanks, connector insulators, food containers and outdoor products.

PC-PBT is a tough and rigid plastic material that is resistant to lubricants, solvents and cleaning agents and is often used in electronic housings.

PEEK (polyether ether ketone) is an organic thermoplastic polymer, an engineering plastic with excellent chemical resistance, excellent abrasion resistance, and moisture resistance. It has superior tensile strength that surpasses most plastics and is often used as a replacement for metal parts in high temperature, high stress applications.

LCP (Liquid Crystal Polymers) have mechanical properties as well as low dielectric constants even at high temperatures. This material offers excellent functionality for micromolding and thin-walled parts. LCPs are widely used in electrical connectors and interconnects as well as medical equipment.

Custom Injection Molded Parts Finishes

SPI is a standard developed by the American Plastics Industry Association for the plastics industry to identify the appearance quality of plastic parts. AN-Prototype also uses the SPI standard to define the finish of plastic injection molded parts. SPI’s standard specifies 12 finish grades, grouped into four categories ranging from shiny to dull. Each grade has a different requirement for perfect allowable deviation, the lower the number, the smaller the deviation, and the higher the number, the greater the deviation.

Standard Finish

Depending on the specific geometry and draft depth of the part design, the finish chosen by the moldmaker is typically SPI B-2,semi-polished finish..

If your plastic parts require the smoothest surface possible, SPI grades A1, A2 and A3 are recommended. The manufacture of molds of this grade requires hardened tool steel with diamond-polished surfaces. Mirror gloss provides an almost mirror-like smooth finish.

If your plastic part requires a semi-gloss finish, AN-Prototype recommends SPI grades B1, B2 and B3. Sanding molds to create parts with a semi-gloss finish is ideal for removing tooling and mold marks.

If you need plastic products that require a matt finish, then we recommend SPI grades C1, C2, C3. Usually sand-polished molds are used for making parts with a matte finish.

If the plastic part requires a textured surface, AN-Prototype recommends the use of SPI grades D1, D2 and D3.

Threaded Inserts

We can install most commonly used standard inserts in UNF and metric sizes.

Pad Printing

Transfer a 2D image onto a 3D part. All images are subject to review.

Laser Engraving

Engrave part numbers, logos, and more onto your parts.

Additional Finishing Options

After processing, injection molded parts can be further finished or coated, which can change the appearance, surface roughness, hardness and chemical resistance of the produced parts.
