3D Printing VS CNC Machining: Which Process Is Best For Your Rapid Prototyping?
3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, builds parts by gradually adding layers of material. It has many advantages over traditional manufacturing processes, but it also has problems. CNC machining is a fairly common subtractive technique for part manufacturing that cuts a blank to create a part.
Materials and Availability
The 3D printing process involves creating parts layer by layer using materials such as liquid photopolymer resin (SLA), photopolymer droplets (PolyJet), plastic or metal powder (SLS/DMLS), and plastic filament (FDM). Therefore, it produces less waste than the CNC process. CNC machining is cutting from the whole material, so the utilization rate of the material is relatively low. The advantage is that almost all materials can be CNC machined, including production-grade engineering plastics and various metal materials. This means that CNC machining may be the most viable technique for prototypes and end-use mass-produced parts that require high functionality and exceptional performance.
Accuracy, surface quality and geometric complexity
3D printing can create parts with highly complex geometries, even hollow shapes that cannot be done by CNC machining, such as handicrafts and so on. CNC machining provides higher dimensional accuracy (±0.005mm) and better surface finish (Ra 0.1μm). State-of-the-art 5-axis CNC milling machines, capable of high-precision machining of more complex parts, will help you meet your toughest manufacturing challenges.
Cost, Quantity and Delivery Time
3D printing typically produces small numbers of parts without tools and without human intervention, allowing for quick turnaround and low cost. The manufacturing cost of 3D printing is priced according to the quantity of material, which means that the larger the part or the higher the quantity, the higher the cost. The process of CNC machining is relatively complicated, requiring specially trained engineers to pre-program the machining parameters and machining paths of the parts, and then process them according to the program. Therefore, take the extra labor into account when quoting. However, CNC machines can run continuously without human supervision, making them ideal for high-volume production.
